Medicine Pouches

Our class had an elder Marilyn teach us about medicine pouches and helped us make them!

Nature Journals

It was such a beautiful day outside last Thursday! All of us took a sketch pencil and our Nature Journals and went on a hill and made a mental map. Each of us drew a picture of where we were on our playground, added some landmarks, recorded sounds and what the weather was like. We hope to get outside more often and record our observations!

This Week At School..................

During "Explorations" this week we made many discoveries! Can you find our new hermit crab? We decided that we need to vote on a name for both of them. For the   first 3 days in a new environment they are not to be handled. We  will let you know next week the names we decide on! Some kids experimented  on the"BUDHA" board and made designs with a brush and water. We are wondering how the design disappears. I noticed a few people were blowing or waving on their picture to make it disappear! Do you have any idea what type of plant we have growing in our room?

This week at school we started"Photographer of the Day"! The helpers take pictures with cameras during the day of activities we would like to share on our BLOG.

www.gogonews.com
We checked out the website gogonews.com and found a cool link about animals!
Our photographer of the day captured a picture and article that we viewed on the SMARTBoard
about "Blue Iguanas". They are no longer considered a critical endangered species!

Remembrance Day is about peace and remembering all the courageous people who fought for our freedom. We were lucky to visit with Mr. Starkey by the display case close to the office. He shared what it was like to be a "Peace-Keeper" after the war ended. He has many badges, pictures and even helmets on display. We thanked him for what he has done. We read many books about peace and Remembrance Day, watched a video and went to a Remembrance Day Service in our gym. Our class wrote about Peace and illustrated with chalk pastels. What Every Community Needs!

We looked closely at artist Antony Gormley's work. He has used clay to construct thousands of people and fills rooms with them. We worked with Mrs. Tait in the Art Room to create our Multi-Age class community. We are hoping to watch our community grow as other Multi-Age classes add their people to our display and create a whole school community!

Exploring Pumpkins and Gourds

This week at school we had a lot of fun exploring pumpkins and gourds using our senses. We were lucky to have Kolton's Mom and Kayden's Mom help us open up all of our pumpkins. We felt inside, scraped out the pulp and seeds, designed faces for our own jack-o-lanterns and counted seeds. Our class was given a white and a blue pumpkin. We voted to count how many seeds were in our blue pumpkin. We counted 390 seeds! Everyone counted the seeds into groups of 10. Our class decided to keep the seeds and try to grow them in the classroom. Each of us measured the height, weight, length and circumference of our pumpkin using cubes. Our class decided that James had the smallest circumference and Damien had the largest circumference. Most of our pumpkins weighed the same as 2 buttercup's weight. The seeds found in the gourd were a different shape than the seeds of the pumpkins. Everyone took their pumpkin home for Halloween night!

Doubles Song!

This week we also learned a new song for Math. It teaches us a fun way to learn our doubles with actions! Try it:

1 add 1 are 2, clap your hands.
2 add 2 are 3, stomp your feet.
3 add 3 are 6
4 add 4 are 8
5 add 5 are 10, do doubles again!

6 add 6 are 12, turn around.
7 add 7 are 14, touch the ground.
8 add 8 are 16
9 add 9 are 18
10 add 10 are 20, doubles a'plenty!

Our class was excited when a special package arrived from British Columbia! Our Art teacher moved to B.C. and remembered we were looking closely at leaves. She found special leaves, wrote a letter and mailed it to us. We were very excited! During Exploration time we studied our leaves on the light table with magnifying glasses!

Some of our friends painted the really large maple leaf! Other kids used chalk pastels and represented the leaves. Some children decided to do leaf rubbings. Our class noticed so many beautiful colours and discovered a lot of veins! We want to make a special package for Ms. Korlak and mail it to her as a thank-you! We have our pictures up on display in our classroom.

In Math this week we have been measuring our pumpkins. We were comparing Buttercup to our pumpkins. Most of our pumpkins weighed the same as 2 Buttercups!

                                Exploring With Stones!

Today we went outside and explored with stones. We used stones to make a picture! Can you see the dragon?

Buttercup Turns ONE!!!!

Buttercup turned 1 on October 14th! We each ate 1 carrot. Buttercup had 2 carrots. We had carrot cupcakes and sang "Happy Birthday" to her!
Buttercup was really excited! She started to popcorn! Buttercup started eating her food from the bowl.

                               Special Guest For Fire Safety!

Savannah's Dad came to our classroom to teach us about "Fire Safety". He shared his big air tank, mask, boots, gloves and very heavy helmet. He sounded like Darth Vader. We learned it is important to have a fire safety plan at home and to not be afraid of firefighters.
