Exploring Pumpkins and Gourds

This week at school we had a lot of fun exploring pumpkins and gourds using our senses. We were lucky to have Kolton's Mom and Kayden's Mom help us open up all of our pumpkins. We felt inside, scraped out the pulp and seeds, designed faces for our own jack-o-lanterns and counted seeds. Our class was given a white and a blue pumpkin. We voted to count how many seeds were in our blue pumpkin. We counted 390 seeds! Everyone counted the seeds into groups of 10. Our class decided to keep the seeds and try to grow them in the classroom. Each of us measured the height, weight, length and circumference of our pumpkin using cubes. Our class decided that James had the smallest circumference and Damien had the largest circumference. Most of our pumpkins weighed the same as 2 buttercup's weight. The seeds found in the gourd were a different shape than the seeds of the pumpkins. Everyone took their pumpkin home for Halloween night!

Doubles Song!

This week we also learned a new song for Math. It teaches us a fun way to learn our doubles with actions! Try it:

1 add 1 are 2, clap your hands.
2 add 2 are 3, stomp your feet.
3 add 3 are 6
4 add 4 are 8
5 add 5 are 10, do doubles again!

6 add 6 are 12, turn around.
7 add 7 are 14, touch the ground.
8 add 8 are 16
9 add 9 are 18
10 add 10 are 20, doubles a'plenty!
